How do you stay motivated?
I get this question a lot.
After a long day, how are you supposed to find the motivation to do one more thing, like keep a commitment you’ve made to yourself?
Okay, here’s an idea.
You don’t need motivation.
Being motivated sounds super helpful, but as far as feelings go, it’s kind of wishy washy, fleeting and not sustainable.
What I suggest instead is, determination.
Determination comes from having a strong reason, WHY.
I know this sounds like a lot of self help woo but knowing your WHY is really important.
WHY do you want to be healthy? WHY do you want to live a healthier lifestyle?
Your WHY HAS to be more compelling than the desire to avoid it doing the thing(s).
Because, you have to tap into your WHY big time when things get hard;
When urges arise.
When feelings like apathy, discomfort, desire and boredom come knocking.
When your lizard brain comes up with excuses:
“The kids need a ride,
You had a long day at work,
Your husband opened a bottle of wine,
or there’s no time.”
Here are my WHYs. They make my self care non- negotiable.
- My mother passed when I was young and I will do what I can to be present for my kids and husband.
- I want to grow old gracefully. I’d like to have mobility, strength, independence, and a clear mind.
- I have a lot left to do. And I don’t like to delegate that much. I need my health and strength to get sh@t done!
Does self- care guarantee anything? Hell no, I wish. But, what’s the alternative?
What are your WHYs? What is non-negotiable for you?
May I suggest that knowing them is a great place to start a journey toward a healthier you.
